# Get started with the Companion app

> Where the Companion app stands today, how sign-in works and what the first start looks like

## Can I install it today?

<Warning>
  The Companion app is in an internal preview (Alpha). There is no public store
  release yet. If you are not part of the preview, you cannot install it.

Preview versions are shared with invited testers only. Android previews go to
invited testers and iOS previews go to an internal TestFlight group. Wear OS
(smartwatch) work is still in progress. Home-screen widgets exist on Android
only. If you are invited, use the invitation you received.

Some parts of the app are still being built or have not been checked on real
devices. Check the [overview](/apps/companion/overview) for the current state.

## Sign in

You need a kombify account first. See [Create an account](/apps/cloud/get-started).

    Choose **Sign in**. The hosted kombify login opens in your browser. Sign in
    or choose your account there.

    The app finishes the sign-in. It shows "Completing sign-in…" for a moment.

## Your first start

The first time you sign in on a device, a short setup asks "How do you want to
start?". You can choose:

* **All-in-1 Companion**
* **AI**
* **Homelab**
* **Paperwork**

You can also keep your current layout or skip. A voice step explains that you
can dictate or hold a voice conversation. The app asks for your microphone only
the first time you use it. The optional SpeechKit app adds a keyboard and an
assistant for your whole phone. You do not need it to use Companion.

A short introduction then shows your modules, the side panel, the composer and
Settings. You can replay it in **Settings** any time.

## Check that it worked

The start screen asks "How can I help you?" and shows your account in
**Settings** under "Signed in as".

## Switch account or sign out

Open **Settings** and choose **Switch account** or **Sign out**. Unsent drafts
are removed from the phone when you do.

## If something goes wrong

1. "Sign-in hasn't finished yet": if the sign-in page was closed, start it
   again. You can also choose **Cancel** or use another account.
2. "Your session has ended": sign in again.
3. "Sign-in is unavailable right now": try again later.
4. "We couldn't clear your saved sign-in": try signing out again.
5. Check your internet connection and try once more.
