# Fix common problems

> What to check when no text appears, the wrong microphone is used or a mode will not start

Work through the problem that matches yours. Each step is short. Test after
each one.

## No text appears

<Steps>
  <Step title="Try Dictation in a plain text field">
    Click into a simple field, for example a note. Hold the Dictation hotkey,
    `Ctrl+Win` by default, say one sentence and release.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check that the mode is on">
    In **Settings > Overview**, make sure Dictation is switched on.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check the microphone">
    In **Settings > Audio & Speech**, check **Audio Input**. See
    [Set up hotkeys, microphone and language](/speechkit/hotkeys-microphone-language).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check the speech model or provider">
    A local model must be downloaded first. A cloud provider needs a key. See
    **Needs attention** in **Overview**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check the privacy scope">
    A strict **Network scope** pauses settings that need the internet.
    Settings shows what is disabled and why.
  </Step>
</Steps>

If the text still does not arrive in one specific app, open **Settings >
Display & Output** and change the text insertion **Method**. Choose **Auto**,
**Clipboard paste** or **Simulated typing**. Auto is recommended.

## The wrong microphone is used

1. Open **Settings > Audio & Speech** and select the right microphone under
   **Audio Input**.
2. Or hover over the overlay and use the microphone quick button, if you added it under **Settings > Display & Output**.
3. If the right microphone is not in the list, reconnect it and reopen
   Settings.

## The hotkey does nothing

* Check that the mode is switched on.
* Check for a conflict. Each mode needs its own combination.
* Try another app to see whether the problem is the app.
* On macOS, the hotkey needs the Microphone and Accessibility permissions. The
  macOS beta may ask again after every update, and hotkeys on macOS are not
  verified, so use the menu-bar item. See
  [Install on macOS](/speechkit/install-macos).

## The text goes to the wrong place or is pasted twice

SpeechKit pastes the text where your cursor is when the recording ends. Keep
the cursor in the right field until the text appears. Change the insertion
method in **Settings > Display & Output** if one app behaves differently.

## Assist or the Voice Agent will not start

These two modes are off in a fresh install. Switch them on in **Overview**,
and read **Needs attention**. See [Use Assist step by step](/speechkit/assist-step-by-step)
and [Talk with the Voice Agent](/speechkit/voice-agent-guide).

## A model does not download

See the troubleshooting section in [Work offline with local models](/speechkit/work-offline).

## Look at the logs

Open the **Logs** tab in the SpeechKit window. It lists application events and
diagnostics. It can help when you ask for support.

## Still stuck

Open an issue in the public SpeechKit repository on GitHub. Include your
Windows version, your SpeechKit version, the mode and provider you use, the
exact steps, and a screenshot or the relevant log lines. Remove anything
private first.
