# Choose your privacy settings

> Decide where your voice may go and what SpeechKit keeps

SpeechKit has two independent privacy settings. Set both on purpose. This page
helps you choose without technical background.

## Question 1: where may SpeechKit connect?

This is the **Network Scope**.

| I want... | Choose | What it means |
| - | - | - |
| The best choice of providers | All networks | Every provider you configured may be used, including cloud services. |
| To use only services in my own network | Local network only | Programs on your device and services at private addresses, for example a server in your home. Public services are blocked. |
| Nothing to leave this computer | This device only | Only programs that SpeechKit itself runs on the computer. Every external service is blocked, even one on the same machine. |

If you choose a stricter scope, settings that do not fit are paused, not
deleted. Settings explains what is disabled and why.

## Question 2: what should be kept?

This is the **Retention Scope**.

| I want... | Choose | What it means |
| - | - | - |
| To keep my history | Retain | Content stays until you delete it, retention settings remove it or an erasure request does. |
| Nothing but the result on my device | Zero retention | Raw meeting material is removed from your device when the meeting's work is over, and no audio file is written. Notes, write-ups and dictation history are kept. |

<Warning>
  The two settings do not depend on each other. A computer that never connects to
  the internet still saves transcripts unless you also choose Zero retention.
</Warning>

## Which provider will my voice go to?

| Provider type | Your voice |
| - | - |
| Local speech-to-text or local model | Stays on your computer. |
| Your own SpeechKit server | Goes to the machine you operate. |
| External voice provider | Audio, text or both may go to that provider under its terms. |

SpeechKit does not make an external provider local. Read the provider's privacy
terms before you send sensitive audio.

## A good default for sensitive work

Choose **This device only**, a local provider and **Zero retention**. Zero
retention does not make an external provider forget what you sent it, which is
why the local provider matters.
