A recovery-first homelab is operated around recoverable state, not only a successful first apply. The Basement Kit release provides owner-bound backup and staged restore operations for that workflow.

Establish the baseline

  1. Apply and verify the Basement Kit.
  2. Confirm that primary data and backup roots are separate.
  3. Configure the CUE-governed Kopia repository.
  4. Create an idempotent snapshot before importing important data.
  5. Restore that snapshot into isolated staging and review the result.

Keep recovery explicit

  • A staged restore does not replace live volumes.
  • Live activation requires local owner approval and creates a safety snapshot.
  • Interrupted activation has an explicit rollback command bound to its operation ID.
  • Verification after recovery matters as much as snapshot creation.
Use Back up and restore for the exact command sequence. Repeat the exercise after material storage, workload, or release changes.
