Try Dictation in a plain text field
Click into a simple field, for example a note. Hold the Dictation hotkey,
Ctrl+Win by default, say one sentence and release.2
Check that the mode is on
In Settings > Overview, make sure Dictation is switched on.
3
Check the microphone
In Settings > Audio & Speech, check Audio Input. See
Set up hotkeys, microphone and language.
4
Check the speech model or provider
A local model must be downloaded first. A cloud provider needs a key. See
Needs attention in Overview.
5
Check the privacy scope
A strict Network scope pauses settings that need the internet.
Settings shows what is disabled and why.
The wrong microphone is used
- Open Settings > Audio & Speech and select the right microphone under Audio Input.
- Or hover over the overlay and use the microphone quick button, if you added it under Settings > Display & Output.
- If the right microphone is not in the list, reconnect it and reopen Settings.
The hotkey does nothing
- Check that the mode is switched on.
- Check for a conflict. Each mode needs its own combination.
- Try another app to see whether the problem is the app.
- On macOS, the hotkey needs the Microphone and Accessibility permissions. The macOS beta may ask again after every update, and hotkeys on macOS are not verified, so use the menu-bar item. See Install on macOS.
