Evidence state (2026-09-24, v0.41.0): Smart Home with Home Assistant is available, lifecycle-verified. Smart Home was verified on the public v0.39.7 archive, where a Depot producer lifecycle run on Ubuntu 24.04 amd64 (Basement Kit, standalone) passed install, init, generate, apply, owner setup, verify, backup, restore, and restore activation, with the application readback verified over the guest-local loopback.
Smart Home gives your household one place to watch and control the devices you choose, on a host you operate. Home Assistant runs the automation platform. The release catalog calls this use case Smart Home and delivers it as the optional smart-home workload.

Choose how Home Assistant runs

Connecting an existing instance preserves its current configuration. StackKits never resets an existing instance to simulate a fresh start, and managing that instance still requires a separate grant.

Choose the host

Use Basement Kit for local hardware, direct access to Zigbee/Z-Wave USB radios, and devices on your LAN. Cloud Kit does not have access to local radios or devices on your home network, so it is not a fit for the local side of Smart Home.

Set it up

  1. Select the smart-home workload in your StackSpec, choose Container or Home Assistant OS, and decide whether to pass a USB radio through.
  2. Generate and apply the stack on a verified Basement Kit.
  3. Open the generated Smart Home route and complete the Home Assistant onboarding wizard yourself: create the owner account, set your home’s location, and add the integrations for the devices you actually have.
  4. Pair your first device and confirm it shows the correct state before you add more.

Check the Node Hub

Open the Node Hub to confirm the Smart Home workload is running and see its generated address. Homepage is a released navigation module, but the initial StackSpec does not select it. The Node Hub is your current entrypoint until you choose otherwise.

Back up and recover

Home Assistant’s configuration and device registrations are part of your kit’s declared backup. Restoring into an isolated environment does not automatically re-pair physical devices or reapply revoked access. Revalidate device bindings and current grants before you resume physical actions. Install the app, choose to connect manually, and enter your generated Smart Home URL when it asks how to connect. Sign in with the owner account you created during onboarding.
